An exquisite, jewel-like work to celebrate an exquisite, jewel-like flower.

Despite its size, the snowdrop is one of nature’s most eloquent creations.

The first sign of life appearing after the rigours of winter.

Tiny white petals pushing through whiter snow, relief and reassurance that the earth is coming back to life, that spring, at last, is on its way.

How glorious it is when we see them blanketing the barren land, the first shoots of the year, a reason to rejoice

Here, on a marble ledge, they stand in Roman tear-catchers.

Their drops of joy, a consolation against the drops of grief the ancient glass would once have held.

It has just stopped raining.

More drops.

Glistening on the waxy green of their leaves.

Beneath the marble hides a frog, ready perhaps to flick its tongue and catch the caterpillar, woodlouse or tiny beetle, hidden amidst the snowdrops’ gentle flowers.
